U-Pick for 4-H Fund Raising Event

NEWS RELEASE:

     Strawberry farmer Carl Grooms will be turning his commercial strawberry farm into a u-pick operation Saturday, March 22nd to support 4-H and the hungry.   All financial proceeds of the day will be donated to 4-H to support   leadership camps, scholarships, and other 4-H programs.   The county’s 4-H Foundation is conducting an endowment campaign to support 4-H for future generations.    Members of local 4-H clubs will also pick berries to donate to area food banks as part of their community service projects.  4-H’ers will be on hand to assist pickers unable to pick, but still wanting to support the 4-H U-Pick project.

     The event will be held at Grooms’ Fancy Farms, 3838 Fancy Farms Road, east of Plant City.  The field can be found at I-4 Exit #25, south on County Line Road for three miles to Rice Road.  Picking will be rain or shine from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.   Concessions will be available.  Strawberries will be 2 quarts for $1.00 or $1.50 for pre-picked berries.    Extension Service educational materials will be available on freezing, canning and preserving strawberries.  Citizens may also pick and donate to the food banks.   

     “This event is a 4-H fundraiser, and a great family sharing experience,” reports Foundation President Mike McKinney.   Over 20,000 boys and girls ranging in age from 8 to 18 participate in 4-H in Hillsborough County and over 200,000 statewide.   McKinney credits Grooms as a great example for our young people.   “He could be making a lot of money on his crop that day, but he is giving back to the community,” McKinney said.  “The last time the community picked berries for the hunger effort, it produced over a ton of the nutritious crop that was distributed among the area food banks.”    More information can be obtained by calling 4-H at 744-5519 in Seffner.
